Officials have not declared if it&#8217;s a ransomware attack or which group is behind the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are working diligently to investigate the source of the incident, confirm the incident\u2019s full scope and impact, and identify whether data may be impacted,&#8221; the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvnstv.com\/top-stories\/security-breach-shuts-down-city-of-beckley-computer-system\/\">confirmed<\/a>\u00a0the cyberattack to a local news station but did not provide a timeline for when systems will be restored. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cyberattack is one of the first against local governments in 2024, following a year full of cyberattacks targeting all levels of government, including many local governments across the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/icma.org\/articles\/pm-magazine\/look-local-government-cybersecurity-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">personally identifiable information<\/a>\u00a0stored by local governments \u2014 including addresses, driver\u2019s license numbers, forms of payment and Social Security numbers \u2014 makes local governments attractive targets.
