{"id":39904,"date":"2021-04-27T15:54:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T19:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/statescoop\/?p=39904"},"modified":"2021-04-27T15:58:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T19:58:07","slug":"nevada-multi-factor-authentication-2-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/statescoop\/nevada-multi-factor-authentication-2-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Nevada to spend $2 million on multi-factor authentication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nevada lawmakers last week approved a $2 million upgrade to the state\u2019s cybersecurity that will install multi-factor authentication on the state\u2019s existing IT systems.<\/p>\n<p>The state will implement the practice \u2014 which requires users to enter both a password and at least one additional form of authentication, often a code received by email or text \u2014 across all agencies via a roughly $1 million-per-year contract with Microsoft Azure, the company\u2019s cloud computing arm.<\/p>\n<p>The project is necessary, officials said, because Nevada\u2019s enterprise IT agency last year processed 65 tickets for compromised accounts and estimated that more than 80% of those tickets were because of weak or stolen passwords.<\/p>\n<p>State technology officials told StateScoop last year that <a href=\"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/statescoop\/podcast\/cybersecurity-pandemic-state-ciso\/\">multi-factor authentication<\/a> was a key security element in enabling remote work during the pandemic, when cloud-based services became indispensable to state agencies with closed office buildings. Also, the <a href=\"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/statescoop\/remote-desktop-protocol-remains-one-of-top-attacked-protocols-report-says\/\">Center for Internet Security<\/a>, a nonprofit that sets best practices for cybersecurity, has said it plans to add multi-factor authentication to its standards starting next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMulti-factor authentication adds a critical statewide layer in the &#8216;security onion,&#8217; dramatically reducing the likelihood that any of our 18,000 accounts could be used by an attacker,\u201d Stephanie Klapstein, a Nevada Department of Administration spokeswoman, <a href=\"https:\/\/thenevadaindependent.com\/article\/lawmakers-approve-spending-2-million-to-boost-states-computer-security-through-two-factor-authentication\">told The Nevada Independent<\/a>. \u201cIt is also an important component of keeping the state compliant with federal security requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klapstein also said that phishing emails were the
