{"id":15902,"date":"2021-07-15T13:49:37","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T17:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/edscoop\/?p=15902"},"modified":"2021-07-15T15:26:06","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T19:26:06","slug":"ucla-google-cloud-apigee-api","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/edscoop\/ucla-google-cloud-apigee-api\/","title":{"rendered":"UCLA taps Google Cloud for API project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of California, Los Angeles this week announced it\u2019s been using Google Cloud\u2019s Apigee platform to assist in managing its more than 200 APIs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application programming interfaces have become increasingly vital for higher education institutions, which often struggle to maintain interoperability between many disparate legacy systems while providing their students a consistent experience across numerous apps. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/edscoop\/ucla-covid19-website-40-languages\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the adoption of Google\u2019s platform is driving heavy use of APIs: 1 million API calls via Apigee in 2020 have grown to 11 million so far this year, the company claims, as the university advances a campus-wide API project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vikas Anand, director of Google Cloud\u2019s business application platform, told EdScoop APIs are an integral piece in the next phase of higher education\u2019s digital transformation efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAPIs are the tip of the spear. They\u2019re covering the shift in digital transformation,\u201d he said. \u201cThe move to digital and cloud has become more popular than ever and a lot of the digital interactions are being followed by APIs. It\u2019s about unlocking the data they have through APIs to different organizations within the universities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anand explained in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/api-management\/ucla-accelerates-innovation-with-google-cloud\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that APIs can help streamline operations as institutions replace multi-step processes with simpler, digital services that can be used by many different offices across an enterprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before adopting Apigee, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scoopmedia-develop.go-vip.net\/edscoop\/ucla-researchers-create-interactive-map-track-hate-crimes-across-country\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was using a gateway its developers had built to manage their APIs and that many of the university\u2019s services relied on a protocol called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SOAP\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SOAP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which Anand said is not conducive to scaling up projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/apigee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">markets Apigee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a platform that allows organizations to \u201cdesign, secure, analyze and scale APIs anywhere with visibility and control.\u201d The need for IT standardization and interoperability has become especially noticeable at higher education institutions during the pandemic, which many chief information officers have said accelerated the IT modernization projects that had been only plodding along previously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA is currently amid a project to develop a simpler, \u201chub-and-spoke\u201d data architecture, eliminating the need for so-called \u201cpoint-to-point\u201d and one-off solutions to ensure applications can interact with each other. In a report detailing the university\u2019s \u201cdata distribution program,\u201d UCLA business intelligence analyst Saheli Datta <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/information-technology-services\/initiatives\/sautter-award-program\/sautter-2018\/ucla-new-data-distribution-paradigm.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that an enterprise solution for data access for developers \u201cis a landmark accomplishment for the campus and paves the way for an open innovation ecosystem by deploying an extensible architecture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt exposes highly standardized, reusable Application Program Interface (API) services that greatly simplify data integration with web and mobile applications,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAs part of this collaborative effort across IT departments, a campus registry for these services was also deployed, that makes the discovery of these API services easy and improves operational efficiency by delivering the means to strengthen engagements with campus partners in fulfilling their data access needs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anand said the university\u2019s financial and student information systems are the current focal point of the API project. Developers now use a self-service portal to access the university\u2019s dozens of APIs, he wrote, establishing \u201ca consistent experience for all parties, and &#8230; authoritative single \u2018sources of truth\u2019 when developers are leveraging data for applications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s helping modernize their IT infrastructure and by doing so, their administrators are able to apply governance and security,\u201d Anand said. \u201cAPIs are helping drive the modern experience, but also APIs are making it easier for partners
