Michigan State University administrators have announced that Rich Czarnecki, the institution’s interim chief information officer, has been selected as its new CIO.

Michigan State University Interim Executive Vice President for Administration Thomas Glasmacher last Friday announced that he will recommend Czarnecki to the Board of Trustees to serve as the higher education institution’s top technology official during its Oct. 25 meeting.

According to a university press release, Czarnecki has been “instrumental” in furthering the state’s IT capabilities, including applying his “collaborative approach to leadership, working closely with academic and administrative units to ensure IT services meet campus needs.”

“Rich has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision during his time as interim CIO, and I am confident he is the right person to drive MSU IT forward, enhancing the stakeholder experience while reducing operational cost,” Glasmacher said in the release. “His deep institutional knowledge and commitment to leveraging technology as a strategic asset to support our academic, research and administrative goals make him the ideal choice for this role.”

Czarnecki is credited with adopting an IT service portfolio model recommended by the nonprofit Educause, which better prepared the university to use data to make decisions. In the release, Czarnecki said he plans to “create innovative, secure and sustainable IT solutions that support MSU’s academic and research excellence.”

Before being named as interim CIO last December, he spent 13 years at MSU in technology roles, including serving as its associate CIO, managing the university’s IT portfolio, IT stewardship and sustainability and federated IT partnerships, according to the release.
